jiffyq58 | Does the "AUTO" in the title of this auction mean that this signature is an autopen? I'm thinking that's what it must mean or the bidding would be higher for a John Young signature than this one has gotten. |
Greggy_D | Definite autopen. |
stsmithva | I was just wondering the same thing yesterday - almost wrote to the seller to ask. I do suspect that it is a sneaky way to sell an autopen as genuine, then if caught be able to say that the AUTO was a perfectly clear notice. Which it isn't. |

I think you are giving him too much credit. This seller is a high volume consignment seller. He doesn't know good from bad autographs.

...or doesn't care. |
Tykeanaut | Well, someone paid $67 for it! |
jiffyq58 | Someone must have thought he/she was getting a steal. Can't imagine anyone knowingly paying that much for an autopen sig on a 3 x 5 card. |

They got a steal alright. But it was the seller doing the stealing.

spaceman1953 | Why is an autopen not an original autograph of an astronaut, if the President of the United States can sign legislation using the autopen as his legal signature? |
Robert Pearlman | Very simply: the reason the President can legally use the Autopen is because the law does not require an original signature. At the time the Constitution was written, a legal mark could be in the form of a wax seal or an authorized signature by another man. But really that is neither here nor there: it doesn't matter if law says an autopen is a legal signature or not, it is not an autograph. To the collector, it does not matter if a signature is legal or not, but rather than it is from the hand of the celebrity whose autograph is being sought. |
bwhite1976 | Well, I clicked on several of his other auctions and they all clearly state that the signatures are hand written and not autopens. The John Young auction has none of these disclaimers. |
